Leinster through to quarter-finals

first_img Wales lock Ian Evans was sent-off for reckless use of the boot in the 20th minute when the scores were tied at 3-3 – a moment of madness that leaves his Six Nations involvement in real doubt – and the Ospreys also had to cope with first half injuries to Ben John and Ryan Jones. Two penalty tries and scores from Cian Healy, Jordi Murphy and Isaac Boss, with fly-half Jimmy Gopperth kicking11 points, saw Leinster progress, as Dan Biggar’s early penalty remained Ospreys’ only score. Leinster advanced to the Heineken Cup quarter-finals as Pool One winners after seeing off 14-man Ospreys with a bonus point 36-3 win at the RDS. Gopperth and Biggar swapped penalties in the first 13 minutes, the visitors keeping edgy Leinster at bay until a penalty try and Healy’s score shortly before half-time. It was far from vintage stuff from the Irish province, who were error-strewn at times, and they finally added to their 17-3 lead with a penalty try past the hour mark. Richardt Strauss’ sensational return from recent heart surgery was warmly applauded, before fellow replacements Murphy and Boss touched down to close out the bonus point win. Leinster’s round six efforts leave them in home quarter-final territory as things stand, but a Dublin date is likely to slip from their grasp by the end of the weekend. The accurate kicking of scrum halves Eoin Reddan and Rhys Webb was an early feature, as both sides went the aerial route. Amid some crunching hits, man-of-the-match Healy bore a hole in the Ospreys defence and a strong Leinster scrum was rewarded by three points from Gopperth’s boot. Already hampered by injuries in the back-line, the Ospreys lost the services of centre John but gritty work at the breakdown allowed Biggar to level matters – with the aid of the crossbar. Aisea Natoga’s smart break was foiled by Gopperth’s penalty-winning contribution at the ensuing ruck, although the Welsh region continued to look nothing a team lying bottom of the pool. Press Association Their task grew significantly harder when Evans was picked out by referee Romain Poite and TMO Laurent Valin for stamping on McCarthy on the ground as the Ospreys mauled forward. The match officials agreed there was deliberate contact with McCarthy’s head and the red card was produced, with the bloodied Leinster lock having to be replaced. It was a real dog-fight up front and Leinster struggled to make their numerical advantage count as the Ospreys – despite also having to replace the influential Jones – battled for every ball. That was until the 33rd minute when a monster lineout maul was collapsed illegally near the Ospreys line and Poite awarded a penalty try which Gopperth converted. Biggar then got back to deny the New Zealander, positioning his leg so that Gopperth was unable to touch down under the posts following an eye-catching Martin Moore run. But Leinster did register their second try before the break, the defensive workload taking its toll on the visitors as electric prop Healy muscled over from close range. Gopperth converted and further injuries to Ospreys hooker Richard Hibbard and his replacement Scott Baldwin led to uncontested scrums with half-an-hour remaining. Leinster’s hunt for more tries stuttered as a Dave Kearney effort was cancelled out for a knock-on and handling errors ruined a couple of Luke Fitzgerald-inspired attacks. The scrum became a factor again upon Marc Thomas’ introduction and Ryan Bevington’s move to hooker, and Leinster used to the set piece to earn their second penalty try – Webb deliberately infringing as the home pack powered up to the line. The third try of the night was converted by Gopperth and his half-back partner Reddan just lost control of possession – under pressure from Matthew Morgan – as Leinster hunted for the fourth. It arrived with eight minutes left as Boss’ short feed was finished off by young back rower Murphy for his second try in as many European games, and Boss then gobbled up Fitzgerald’s inviting pass for the fifth. Murphy, Brian O’Driscoll, Boss and Ian Madigan all had a few bites at the cherry for a sixth try, however a couple of knock-ons let the overworked Ospreys off the hook. last_img read more

Brett Anderson stymies Miami Marlins in L.A. Dodgers’ 7-1 win

first_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error MIAMI >> This is not the Brett Anderson that baseball fans in Denver and Oakland remember.Come to think of it, baseball fans in Denver and Oakland might not remember Anderson well at all. His 15 starts and 89 innings pitched are the most he’s given any team since 2010.The Dodgers only signed Anderson to an incentive-laden one-year contract on the chance he could become the pitcher he was early in his career if he stayed healthy. For the first three months of the season at least, that gamble has paid off.Anderson tied a career high with 10 strikeouts Friday in a 7-1 win over the Miami Marlins. The 27-year-old left-hander allowed a run in the first inning on a leg-me-out infield single by Dee Gordon, who stole second and then scored after a pair of groundouts. The Marlins hardly threatened again. Anderson allowed two singles in the third inning but picked off both runners. With runners on first and second in the fourth inning, Anderson struck out Giancarlo Stanton, then got a pair of ground balls to end the inning.Anderson struck out the last four batters he faced en route to a 10-strikeout game, which matched a career high. He allowed a total of five hits, all singles, and walked one batter in evening his record at 4-4.“Early on (this season) he seemed tentative, not being out there in a couple years,” Mattingly said. “As games have gone on, he’s more vocal — ‘I still feel good. I can get these guys.’ He’s pushing to go later into games.”The Dodgers provided ample run support, taking a 2-1 lead on a home run by Scott Van Slyke in the second inning and never looking back. RBI singles by Alex Guerrero, Jimmy Rollins and even Anderson himself — the first single of his career — gave the Dodgers a 5-1 lead after four innings.Howie Kendrick went 4 for 5. Adrian Gonzalez went 2 for 4. Guerrero, making his second straight start in left field, finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Justin Nicolino (1-1) took the loss in his second start of the season for the Marlins. The Dodgers have now won three straight games behind the back of their starting rotation — Mike Bolsinger, Carlos Frias and Anderson — away from Dodger Stadium, where they’ve struggled. Even with Friday’s win, the Dodgers are only 15-20 on the road, the worst road record of any division leader in baseball.Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke are scheduled to start the next two days, against Tom Koehler and Jose Urena, respectively.center_img “My stuff was probably the best overall it’s been,” he said.As if to erase any last memory of his injury-plagued past, Anderson saved his best for last. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said that Anderson was only assured of facing one or two batters when he sent the left-hander out for the seventh inning. Anderson struck out both Marcel Ozuna and Jeff Baker, then froze Derek Dietrich on a slider over the outside corner. It was the third time Anderson has completed seven innings this season — something he had done three times the last two years combined.“You wouldn’t have known anything (about the past), he’s been so seamless,” Mattingly said of Anderson. “He’s made every ’pen. He’s been able to do everything everyone else is doing. If you didn’t know anything about his past, you wouldn’t say a thing about it.”last_img read more

Foley: The Art of Making Sound Effects

first_imgTricks of the TradeImage: Monty Python and the Holy Grail via Michael White ProductionsIf you’re interested in recording your own sounds, check out Recording Foley and Sound Effects: The Fundamentals. Here are a few common tricks you can practice recording on your own.Breaking bones: break a stalk of celery or head of lettuceBody punches: hit a phone bookFlapping bird wings: wave a pair of leather glovesCrunching snow: crush a leather pouch filled with corn starchWhoosh: wave around a thin stick or arrowHorse hooves: clap together two coconut shells cut in half  — as seen above in Monty Python and the Holy Grail Modern Foley ArtistsToday, foley artists create entire atmospheres. They record the sounds of characters, props, and even clothing. Gary Hecker is a veteran foley artist who works on many of today’s blockbuster films. He started his professional career in the 1970s and 80s, working on films like The Exorcist, Friday the 13th, The Empire Strikes Back, and Back to the Future.Hecker now has well over 300 credits to his name. In this video from the SoundWorks Collection, Hecker shows you how he used classic foley techniques to create sound effects for the film Robin Hood, starting with the process of recording the footsteps of the main characters. From snapping celery stalks to slapping phone books, learn how foley artists use everyday objects to create realistic sound effects in film.Top image via SoundWorks CollectionFoley is the art of creating sound effects for radio, film, and television. The term actually comes from a man, Jack Donovan Foley, who made sound effects for live radio broadcasts. He focused on creating realistic sounds with the tools he had around him rather than using generic sounds made in other programs. This was reminiscent of the theatrical sounds of vaudeville shows.Image: Jack Foley via The Art of FoleyJack Foley started working for Universal Studios in 1914. By the time “talkies” came around in the 1920s, studios wanted to create authentic sound effects for their films. On set, microphones were only used to record dialogue. Therefore sound effects would have to be recorded after the film was shot.Foley assembled a team that would project the film onto a screen while recording an audio track of sound effects — mostly footsteps. The earliest films had them adding the sounds of walking and doors opening and closing.Foley became the expert in sound effects audio recording. He continued to perform up until his death in 1967. Many of the techniques he developed are still used today.Three Types of FoleyFoley artists do not create every sound in a film. Complex sounds like car engines or computer noises fall under the direction of a Sound FX Editor, who uses a library of sounds. The foley artists focus on three key areas: footsteps, movement, and specific props.Image: Universal Studios Foley Pit via The Studio Tour1. FootstepsThis category is self-explanatory. The footsteps of the main character are recorded very early in the process. This isn’t as easy as walking by a microphone. Foley artists wear certain shoes and walk on specific surfaces to attain the right sounds for a film. These surfaces are called foley pits, which offer all sorts of different flooring types. This allows the foley artist to instantly record the sounds of a character walking across a lawn, onto a sidewalk, and into a home.  This also includes footsteps of animals, like the famous sound of galloping horse hooves.2. MovementMovement focuses on the sounds of clothing a character is wearing. This isn’t just loud clothes like a knight’s armor — even denim blue jeans make a sound when a character crosses their legs or squirms in a chair.Image via Shutterstock3. PropsCreating the sounds made by props can fall under the foley artist or sound editor. Foley artists tend to work with props that characters interact with, like a sword being unsheathed. In this video from CBS Sunday Morning, foley artist Marko Costanzo shows how he used leaves to create the swirling sound of the witch from Into the Woods and how he cracked celery to create the sound of breaking bones for The Big Lebowski. center_img Also, don’t forget you can complement your foley work with the Essential SFX packages found right here on PremiumBeat!last_img read more
