Mount Fuji recommended for World Heritage status

first_imgJapan’s tallest mountain and perhaps its most well known landmark is set for World Heritage status if recommendations from a UNESCO panel are followed. The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), an affiliate of UNESCO, said the sacred peak is a national symbol of Japan, playing an important role in the country’s religions, culture and history. The news was well received by local government and industry bodies.“Once Mount Fuji is registered as a World Heritage site, we hope it will be known to more people,” said an official of Susono, Shizuoka Prefecture, at the foot of the mountain, the Japan Times reported. In anticipation of the looming status change and the expected increase in visitor numbers to Mount Fuji, local officials are reportedly looking to balance improvements in infrastructure and accommodation with the necessary preservation of the site.”It’s crucial that we preserve all the vantage points from which we can view Mount Fuji,” Shoji Watai, an expert on a cultural preservation panel of Fujinomiya city, one of several towns near the mountain said.According to the Japan National Tourism Organisation, some 300,000 people travel to Mount Fuji each year, most of who visit during July and August, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.Mount Fuji can expect to receive formal World Heritage status approval in June.Source = e-Travel Blackboard: G.
